About the AP Biology Exam

AP Biology covers the core concepts of modern biology including evolution, cellular processes, genetics and heredity, biological systems, and ecology. The exam places heavy emphasis on scientific inquiry and data analysis alongside content knowledge. Students must be comfortable designing experiments and interpreting real data.

The exam runs 3 hr 15 min. The multiple-choice section has 60 questions and accounts for approximately 50% of the total score. The Free Response Questions (FRQ) accounts for the remaining 50%.

What Is a Good AP Bio Score?

About 61% of students earn a 3 or higher. AP Biology is considered one of the harder AP sciences. A 4 or 5 is particularly valuable for pre-med and life sciences students and is viewed very positively by selective universities.

The College Board assigns a label to each score level. A 5 means Extremely Well Qualified, a 4 means Well Qualified, a 3 means Qualified, a 2 means Possibly Qualified, and a 1 means No Recommendation. Most colleges award credit only for scores of 3 or higher, with many competitive schools requiring 4 or 5 for the same credit.

AP Biology College Credit Policy

Many schools award 6 to 8 credit hours for scores of 4 or 5, covering Introductory Biology I and II with lab. A score of 3 may earn 3 to 4 credits for one semester. Credit policies vary widely so always verify with your institution.

Credit policies vary significantly between institutions. Some universities, particularly highly selective ones, use AP scores for placement rather than credit. That means they let you skip ahead in a course sequence but do not reduce your graduation credit requirement. Always verify with your specific school's registrar or AP credit chart before assuming your score earns a particular number of credits.

How Is the AP Bio Score Calculated?

The College Board converts raw scores into a composite score, then maps that composite to a final AP score of 1 to 5. The multiple-choice section is scored by counting correct answers. There is no penalty for wrong answers, so it always pays to attempt every question. Free response answers are scored by trained AP readers using detailed rubrics.

The exact composite-to-AP-score conversion (called the "raw score conversion chart") is set after each exam administration based on the difficulty of that year's exam. The cutoffs used in this calculator are based on historical averages and are intended as estimates. Your actual score will be determined by College Board after scoring is complete.

Frequently Asked Questions

How hard is AP Biology?

AP Biology is one of the more challenging AP science exams, with a pass rate of about 61%. The content spans molecules to ecosystems and requires understanding of scientific reasoning and experimental design alongside content recall and data analysis.

What is the AP Biology exam format?

The exam has 60 multiple-choice questions completed in 90 minutes and 6 free-response questions completed in 90 minutes. The free-response section includes 2 long questions and 4 short questions. Students may use a calculator for the FRQ section.

Do I need to memorize everything for AP Biology?

AP Biology de-emphasizes pure memorization in favor of conceptual understanding and scientific reasoning. That said, knowing key terminology, pathways like cellular respiration and photosynthesis, and genetic mechanisms is still essential for a high score.

What is a good AP Biology score?

A score of 3 earns college credit at most schools. For pre-med and biology majors, a 4 or 5 is preferred and may earn lab credit as well. Only about 15% of students earn a 5.

Does AP Biology count for pre-med requirements?

AP Biology credits may satisfy the intro biology requirement for pre-med at some schools. Many medical school advisors recommend taking introductory biology on campus to ensure sufficient depth. Check with your premed advisor at your specific school.
