How the 4.0 GPA Scale Works

Most US high schools and colleges use the 4.0 scale. Each letter grade maps to a fixed GPA point value. An A is worth 4.0, a B is worth 3.0, a C is worth 2.0, a D is worth 1.0, and an F is worth 0.0. Plus and minus grades fall in between. Your cumulative GPA is the weighted average of all your course grades.

The national average GPA for high school students is around 3.0 (a B). For college students it varies by institution, but a 3.0 is generally considered a solid baseline. Anything above 3.5 is considered strong, and a 3.7 or higher is typically required for academic honors.
