How the Average Grade Calculator Works

This calculator helps you figure out your overall grade in a class by using weighted averages. You can enter your grades in one of three ways: as percentages, letter grades, or points.

Average Percentage (%)

If your grades are in percentage form (like 85%, 92%, etc.), enter each grade along with how much it's worth. The calculator uses the weight to figure out how much each grade counts toward your final average.

For example, if your midterm is worth 30% of your final grade and you got an 80%, and your final exam is worth 70% and you scored 90%, the calculator will give you the correct weighted average.

Average Letter Grade

You can also enter letter grades like A, B+, or C-. Each letter grade has a value based on the standard 4.0 GPA scale. Just add each grade and its weight. The calculator will convert the letters to grade points, calculate the weighted average, and then show your final grade as a letter.

Average Points

If you have grades based on points (like 45 out of 50, or 88 out of 100), enter the points you earned and the total possible points. The calculator will figure out the percentage for each item, average them based on their weights, and give you your final grade.

You can add as many rows as needed. Once you're done, the calculator gives you the overall average grade. You can also reset everything and start over.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I choose between percentages, letter grades, or points?

Use the format your course provides. If you have percentages (like 85%), enter them directly. If you have letter grades (like A or B+), the calculator converts them into a numeric value. If you're using points (like 45 out of 50), enter both the points earned and the total possible. The calculator will convert this to a percentage automatically.

What does 'weight' mean?

Weight shows how much each grade item counts toward your final grade. For example, if your final exam is worth 40% of your grade and a quiz is worth 10%, the calculator will apply these weights when calculating your average. This gives you a more accurate final result.

Do all weights need to add up to 100%?

Yes. The total of all weights should equal 100%. If the weights add up to less than 100%, you're only calculating part of the course. If they add up to more, something is likely double-counted. Always double-check the weights.

Will the calculator show my final letter grade?

Yes. After all entries are added, the calculator shows your final average as a percentage and as a letter grade, based on standard grade scales.
