About the AP Calculus BC Exam

AP Calculus BC covers everything in AP Calculus AB plus additional topics including parametric equations, polar functions, vector-valued functions, sequences and series, and more advanced integration techniques. It is equivalent to two semesters of college calculus and is among the most content-dense AP exams.

The exam runs 3 hr 15 min. The multiple-choice section has 45 questions and accounts for approximately 50% of the total score. The Free Response Questions (FRQ) accounts for the remaining 50%.

What Is a Good AP Calc BC Score?

About 71% of students earn a 3 or higher, and 38% earn a 5, which is one of the highest 5-rates among major AP exams. This reflects a highly self-selected STEM student population.

The College Board assigns a label to each score level. A 5 means Extremely Well Qualified, a 4 means Well Qualified, a 3 means Qualified, a 2 means Possibly Qualified, and a 1 means No Recommendation. Most colleges award credit only for scores of 3 or higher, with many competitive schools requiring 4 or 5 for the same credit.

AP Calculus BC College Credit Policy

Strong scores of 4 or 5 typically earn 6 to 8 credits, covering Calculus I and II. A score of 3 earns at least Calculus I credit at most schools. An AB subscore of 3 or higher may also earn Calculus I placement independently.

Credit policies vary significantly between institutions. Some universities, particularly highly selective ones, use AP scores for placement rather than credit. That means they let you skip ahead in a course sequence but do not reduce your graduation credit requirement. Always verify with your specific school's registrar or AP credit chart before assuming your score earns a particular number of credits.

How Is the AP Calc BC Score Calculated?

The College Board converts raw scores into a composite score, then maps that composite to a final AP score of 1 to 5. The multiple-choice section is scored by counting correct answers. There is no penalty for wrong answers, so it always pays to attempt every question. Free response answers are scored by trained AP readers using detailed rubrics.

The exact composite-to-AP-score conversion (called the "raw score conversion chart") is set after each exam administration based on the difficulty of that year's exam. The cutoffs used in this calculator are based on historical averages and are intended as estimates. Your actual score will be determined by College Board after scoring is complete.

Frequently Asked Questions

What extra topics does AP Calculus BC cover beyond AB?

AP Calculus BC adds parametric equations, polar functions, vector-valued functions, sequences and series (including convergence tests and Taylor series), L'Hopital's rule, Euler's method, and additional integration techniques like integration by parts.

What is the AB subscore on AP Calculus BC?

Students taking AP Calculus BC also receive an AB subscore reflecting their performance on the AB-only portion of the exam. If you earn a 3 or higher on the AB subscore, many schools will award Calculus I credit even if your overall BC score is lower.

Why is the AP Calculus BC 5 rate so high?

AP Calculus BC attracts students who are typically a year or two ahead in math and have strong algebraic foundations. This self-selection effect pushes the score distribution much higher than the general AP population.

Is AP Calculus BC worth taking after AP Calculus AB?

If you scored a 4 or 5 on AP Calculus AB, taking AP Calculus BC the following year allows you to earn college credit for both Calculus I and II, potentially saving two full semesters of required coursework in STEM programs.

What score on AP Calculus BC earns the most college credit?

A score of 4 or 5 on AP Calculus BC typically earns 6 to 8 credit hours (Calculus I and II) at most universities. Some schools award 3 credits for a score of 3. Verify with your specific school's credit policy.
