About the AP Precalculus Exam

AP Precalculus, introduced in 2023, covers polynomial and rational functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, trigonometric functions, and an introduction to functions and modeling. The course is designed to build the function fluency students need before entering AP Calculus.

The exam runs 3 hr 15 min. The multiple-choice section has 40 questions and accounts for approximately 50% of the total score. The Free Response Questions (FRQ) accounts for the remaining 50%.

What Is a Good AP Precalc Score?

About 56% of students earn a 3 or higher. As a newer exam, score data is still accumulating. A 4 or 5 demonstrates the function fluency that directly prepares students for AP Calculus AB or BC.

The College Board assigns a label to each score level. A 5 means Extremely Well Qualified, a 4 means Well Qualified, a 3 means Qualified, a 2 means Possibly Qualified, and a 1 means No Recommendation. Most colleges award credit only for scores of 3 or higher, with many competitive schools requiring 4 or 5 for the same credit.

AP Precalculus College Credit Policy

AP Precalculus credit acceptance is still expanding since the course launched in 2023. Some schools award 3 credits for pre-calculus or a math elective. Credit is less universally accepted than for AP Calculus exams.

Credit policies vary significantly between institutions. Some universities, particularly highly selective ones, use AP scores for placement rather than credit. That means they let you skip ahead in a course sequence but do not reduce your graduation credit requirement. Always verify with your specific school's registrar or AP credit chart before assuming your score earns a particular number of credits.

How Is the AP Precalc Score Calculated?

The College Board converts raw scores into a composite score, then maps that composite to a final AP score of 1 to 5. The multiple-choice section is scored by counting correct answers. There is no penalty for wrong answers, so it always pays to attempt every question. Free response answers are scored by trained AP readers using detailed rubrics.

The exact composite-to-AP-score conversion (called the "raw score conversion chart") is set after each exam administration based on the difficulty of that year's exam. The cutoffs used in this calculator are based on historical averages and are intended as estimates. Your actual score will be determined by College Board after scoring is complete.

Frequently Asked Questions

When was AP Precalculus introduced?

AP Precalculus was introduced by the College Board in the 2023 to 2024 academic year. It is designed to be taken before AP Calculus AB or BC and provides college credit for pre-calculus coursework.

What topics are on AP Precalculus?

AP Precalculus covers polynomial functions, rational functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, trigonometric functions (including the unit circle and sinusoidal models), and an additional unit on functions and modeling.

Is AP Precalculus easier than AP Calculus?

AP Precalculus is generally considered less conceptually demanding than AP Calculus AB. It covers the mathematical foundations that calculus builds on and is designed to be accessible to a wider range of students.

Does AP Precalculus count for college credit?

AP Precalculus credit acceptance is still expanding. Many schools award 3 credits in pre-calculus or a math elective. Credit acceptance is not yet as universal as for AP Calculus, so check your specific school's policy.

Should I take AP Precalculus or go straight to AP Calculus AB?

If you have completed a strong pre-calculus course and feel ready, you can go straight to AP Calculus AB. AP Precalculus is best suited for students who want to earn credit for pre-calculus or who need stronger function fluency before tackling calculus.
